Nanjing Dajiaochang Airport Renewal Plan - RUNWAY PARK International Competition for Young Designers

The urban public space—no longer bound by the over-simplified functionalist notions of connectivity—can create a field of experience which is multi-dimensional and interdisciplinary. The crucial characteristic of public space, in the contrast of private places, is it is open and can be shared by everyone, attracting diverse audience as well as indulging people to use creative design, culture and art when engaging the place-making in public arena. By doing so, we hope more people would love to come and stay for meeting different type of person and being inspired by others and things, in which consequence, the whole city could be endowed with charm and glamour.

Nanjing Dajiaochang Airport is located in the South New Town District of Nanjing and originally was a training field for battalion in Ming Dynasty. In 1929, the government of Republic of China built an airport and made it a national air force base. Although the Dajiaochang Airport which has witnessed the transformation of modern China was officially closed in 2015, its story is expected to be continued. The master planning of Nanjing South New Town District proposed an idea of an airfield runway park, open to the public to showcase the past, the present and the future of Nanjing, inviting an inclusive participation from citizens.

Project: YESTERDAY ONCE MORE——The Past and Present of the Runway Park

Participants: GUO Haoran, WANG Ning, LI Shangyuan, ZHOU Yaoyi

Institute: Southeast University

Brief introduction of the project (by authors)

“First of all, through the field research and analysis of the base, one of the characteristics of the large campus: Reed, helped the campus to create a good atmosphere.Secondly, we review the history of the runway park and sort out a series of time points in the university campus: the Ming and Qing dynasties’ military camp - the prosperity and destruction of the Republic of China - and our vision and vision for the future of the runway campus.

For the protection of the runway, we have adopted a series mobile devices——the vitality units, and designed it to consider the various ways in which it exists: exhibition, leisure, integration with green plants, public toilets, bars, etc. The series of arrangement and organization of the vitality units reflect the conceptualization of the relationship at their time points. At the same time, we consider the design of the day and night of the runway park, and add the design of the lights at night, strengthen the center line to emphasize the airport runway.”
